ONE DAY WORKSHOP

Lead and manage through complexity

Command and control is ineffective in complex systems where anything can and does happen. Reconsidering the role of leadership and thinking systemically helps us confidently and dynamically forge paths through uncertainty.

Understand the role effective leaders play in complex situations and identify ways to be more influential as a leader in complexity.
Go below the surface to create new understanding of the dynamics in your own complex system.
Use conflict, difference and paradox as a way to identify new options and next actions.

We live in interesting times. The amount of data we are expected to process has increased thirtyfold in the last 20 years; with every new opportunity created by technology, it increases the pace, scope and scale of our businesses. The world is changing faster than we can understand and process it, and it’s impossible for leaders to plan, predict and understand it alone.

That raises new challenges for leaders, which this course seeks to help answer – if we can no longer plan a path based on our experience and expertise, how will we find a courageous way through uncertainty that inspires confidence in those we want to follow us?

What you’ll learn

In this one day workshop, you will learn:

  • The difference between simple, complicated and complex situations and the most effective role for leaders in each
  • How to use powerful questions to ‘see and hear’ the system, to understand what’s really going on
  • How to surface the hidden dynamics present in the system to create a deeper understanding and surface new options
  • The value of challenge, conflict and difference, and how to use all three to create new understanding
  • Working with apparent paradoxes and dilemmas, and using them to define a way forwards
  • How to tap into the collective knowledge and perspectives of your wider network to create ‘systemic wisdom’
  • Inspiring confidence and ‘followship’ in others, even when you’re uncertain about what to do next

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is for:

  • Managers and leaders of complex organisations who need to balance the needs of different stakeholder groups
  • Anyone struggling to build a reliable plan that isn’t out of date as soon as its been shared
  • Change agents wanting to find a way forwards in uncertain times when there’s no clear ‘right’ answer

What people are saying about this workshop

There was a lack of pretension through the event, which made my heart sing.
It was great to come along to the day – I took a LOT from it.
I thoroughly enjoyed the day… it triggered all sorts of ideas for me and what a fab facilitator!
"Uncertainty and complexity can be debilitating – or they can be exhilarating, depending on how we respond to them. The most rewarding conversations I have are the ones that help leaders make new sense and find new perspectives to make progress."

Beyond the workshop…

We work with leaders, teams and organisations to help them understand the complex systems they work within and help them identify how to use challenges, paradoxes and powerful questions to understand what’s really going on and to find clarity and make choices. If you want to think aloud about any aspect of leading and managing through complexity, we’d love to talk – you can book a call straight into our diary here.
